The Institute for Critical Education Studies is a collective of education scholars at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.


ICES publishes two open access, peer-reviewed scholarly journals: Workplace: A Journal for Academic Labor and Critical Education.


ICES journals are published using Open Journal Systems, an open source journal management and publishing system developed by the Public Knowledge Project.


Workplace was founded in 1998 by collective scholars in critical education promoting a new dignity in academic work. Contributions are aimed at higher education workplace activism and dialogue on all issues of academic labor. Read more about the journal here.


Critical Education, founded in 2010, is an international peer-reviewed journal, which publishes articles that critically examine contemporary education contexts and practices. Critical Education is interested in theoretical and empirical research as well as articles that advance educational practices that challenge the existing state of affairs in society, schools, and informal education.
